Best Management Practice launches Management of Portfolios (MoP™)

8 February 2011..... Best Management Practice today launches the Management of Portfolios (MoP™) guide, the latest addition to its suite of project and programme management guidance. MoP offers comprehensive and practical guidance for managers in all portfolio related roles, across both public and private sector organizations.

The guidance includes two key publications: the 'Management of Portfolios' guide, and 'An Executive Guide to Portfolio Management'. Both are available now and are published by TSO (Official Publishers), with a range of electronic versions to follow shortly, including an eBook, a PDF and an online subscription. The APM Group (APMG) is launching a qualification as part of an accreditation and certification scheme to support the new guidance.

'An Executive Guide to Portfolio Management' describes Portfolio Management from a strategic perspective, helping senior executives to understand the core principles of Portfolio Management and how this approach can help organizations to prioritize their investment and focus resources on the right change programmes and projects. The main 'Management of Portfolios' guide provides practical guidance for managers of portfolios, those working in portfolio offices and all those with involvement in the portfolio management discipline.

"This new guidance focuses on the essential link between an organization's strategy and the management of its project portfolio management," comments Emily Egle, TSO Account Manager for the MoP guide. "It looks at both definition and delivery, helping organizations to identify and prioritize its portfolio of programmes and projects, and then to assess the portfolio's strategic contribution and to make sure it delivers."

The Management of Portfolios guide incorporates both strategic and organizational perspectives on portfolio management, examining the linkages between strategy and portfolio, but also providing a wealth of practical approaches covering critical issues such as governance and decision making, and resource and dependency management. The guide describes how benefits management can best be covered at a portfolio level, balancing delivery requirements with a focus on value that becomes embedded throughout the portfolio process, from the initial stages of investment appraisal to benefits realization. The collective effort of a workforce is recognised within MoP as 'Organizational Energy', an important resource that can be channelled to ensure strategic objectives are realised.

This new Portfolio Management best practice guide will help senior executives and portfolio management practitioners to understand how implementing a Portfolio Management approach can address business challenges and deliver customer focused products and services in line with strategic objectives.

MoP publications can be ordered from TSO in a variety of formats to suit users' needs, including hard copies, PDF format, and eBooks that are downloadable to most handheld devices for instant access.
